Food Security

Pitsik_As in many Arctic regions, food security in Nunatsiavut is also a challenge. Although the Inuit Health Survey indicated that food sharing networks were strong and the majority of households shared their country food with households, it also indicated that food insecurity was a major problem in homes in Nunatsiavut at the time of the survey despite the strong sharing. Specifically, 44% of households in Nunatsiavut reported moderate or severe food insecurity (as a comparison, 9% of Canadian households reported moderate or severe food insecurity in 2004). To help with our work towards a food security strategy in Nunatsiavut, the Sustainable Communities Initiative is piloting (implementing and evaluating) two unique food security programs that also address many inter-connected issues related to food security and community health.
